Description

A quick and easy dessert that pairs the flavors of churros with salty saltine crackers, topped with a delicious brown-sugar toffee and cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers, plain
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch flaky sea salt
  • Optional: 4 ounces semisweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup chopped toasted nuts, or white chocolate for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Arrange the saltines in a single, tight layer on the sheet.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat and stir in the brown sugar until dissolved.
  4. Bring to a steady boil for 3 to 4 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove the caramel from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Quickly pour and spread the caramel evenly over the saltines.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the top.
  9. Scatter flaky sea salt and any optional toppings while still warm.
  10. Cool completely on the counter for at least 1 hour before breaking into pieces.

Notes

Feel free to modify the toppings with lemon-sugar or other nuts. Ensure the caramel reaches the right consistency to prevent it from being sticky.
